A sleeping bag is a necessary bit of camping equipment that offers warmth and comfort while sleeping outdoors. Like most things in the modern technical world, there are loads of options and specs to choose from, such as mummy and rectangular sleeping bags. This article is about my personal experiences with both and what I believe should be the main considerations when choosing between these two types.

The Shape

Mummy and rectangular sleeping bags differ mainly in their shape. Mummy sleeping bags have a tapered form that is wider at the shoulders and narrower at the feet, resembling a mummy’s shape. Conversely, rectangular sleeping bags have a typical rectangular shape that has the same width from head to toe.

Advantages of Mummy Sleeping Bags

The main advantage of a mummy sleeping bag is its tapered shape, which helps retain heat more efficiently as there is less empty space to warm up. This makes them suitable for cold weather camping and mountaineering. Additionally, mummy sleeping bags are more lightweight and packable, making them a good choice for backpackers and hikers who need to save space.

Advantages of Rectangular Sleeping Bags

On the other hand, rectangular sleeping bags are generally more spacious and comfortable. Their shape allows for more freedom of movement, making them ideal for people who move a lot in their sleep or like to sleep in different positions. Moreover, they are often less expensive than mummy sleeping bags, making them a more budget-friendly option.

My Opinon

Based on my personal experience, I don’t like feeling restricted while sleeping, especially when wearing additional layers. Hence, the mummy sleeping bag is not my preference.

Ultimately, the decision to choose between a mummy or rectangular sleeping bag depends on your personal preference and camping needs. If you plan to camp in colder weather or need a more lightweight and packable option, a mummy sleeping bag may be the better choice. However, if comfort and affordability are your top priorities, a rectangular sleeping bag may be more suitable.
