DAY 2: INTO THE MOUNTAINS
Distance: Approx 7 KM | Ascent: 950 M | Max Altitude: 1950 M (Petrostruga Hut)
After breakfast, we leave Litochoro and drive up to the Gortsia trailhead, located on the lower slopes of Mount Olympus. From here, we begin our steady ascent through ancient forests of beech and pine, following well marked trails toward the alpine zone. The trail is peaceful and shaded, with clearings that offer occasional views down to the Aegean Sea. After a few hours of hiking and a break for lunch on the trail, we arrive at Petrostruga Hut, where we spend our first night in the mountains. This refuge sits on a beautiful ridge with panoramic views, offering a warm meal, mountain hospitality, and a good night’s rest before summit day.
DAY 3: SUMMIT OF THE GODS
Distance: Approx 10 KM | Ascent: 1000 M | Descent: 1100 M | Max Altitude: 2918 M (Mytikas)
Summit day begins early. After a hearty breakfast, we continue our ascent toward Skala, a prominent ridge on the Olympus massif. From here, weather and conditions permitting, we make our final push to Mytikas, the true summit of Mount Olympus and the highest point in Greece. This final stretch involves some exposed scrambling with the support and guidance of our expert team. The summit offers breathtaking views over northern Greece and the Aegean coastline, and a moment to reflect on what it means to reach the mythical home of the gods. After time at the top, we descend to Spilios Agapitos Refuge, nestled into the cliffs at 2100 metres, where we enjoy a well earned dinner and spend our final night on the mountain.
DAY 4: FROM PEAK TO SEA
Distance: Approx 6.5 KM | Descent: 1000 M
After breakfast, we continue our descent through forests and rocky paths to the Prionia trailhead, one of the most beautiful and popular sections of Mount Olympus. Once we reach the base of the trail, a private transfer takes us straight to the nearby coast, where we enjoy a celebratory lunch by the beach followed by a refreshing swim in the Aegean Sea. This peaceful and playful moment by the water is a perfect way to end a powerful few days in the mountains. After lunch and time to relax, we return to Litochoro for hot showers, a proper rest, and our farewell dinner, hosted by your LHO Team Leader.
DAY 5: FAREWELL
After breakfast, we say our goodbyes. Airport transfers to Thessaloniki are included and will be arranged according to the departure details you provided in your team form. If your travel plans change, please inform your LHO Team Leader as early as possible so we can adjust accordingly. LEARN MOREHow long does it take to climb Mount Olympus?
Climbing Mount Olympus typically takes two full days of trekking. On our itinerary, we hike from the trailhead to the Petrostruga Hut on day two, then summit Mytikas, the highest peak, on day three before descending to the next refuge. This pacing allows for acclimatisation, a more immersive experience, and time to enjoy the scenery.
How hard is it to climb Mount Olympus?
Climbing Mount Olympus is challenging and requires a good level of fitness. The summit of Mytikas involves some exposed scrambling and rocky terrain, but no prior technical climbing experience is needed. With proper guidance from our certified team, this climb is achievable for determined beginners and rewarding for experienced hikers alike.
Where do we sleep during the climb of Mount Olympus?
During the climb of Mount Olympus, we stay in authentic mountain refuges located high in the alpine zone. On the first night in the mountains, we sleep at Petrostruga Hut, surrounded by forested ridges and expansive views. After summiting Mytikas, we descend and spend the second night at Spilios Agapitos Refuge, nestled on the slopes below the summit. These lodges are simple and welcoming, offering shared dormitory style rooms, hearty meals, and a warm mountain atmosphere that adds to the experience. Before and after the climb, we stay in carefully selected hotels in Litochoro, a charming town at the base of the mountain.
What’s the food like on this trip?
Food is a highlight of the Mount Olympus Summit Journey. While in Litochoro, we dine at handpicked local tavernas that serve fresh and authentic Greek cuisine. Expect grilled meats, seasonal vegetables, homemade bread, and rich Mediterranean flavours. During the mountain phase of the trip, the refuges provide hearty home cooked meals designed to keep you well fuelled after a full day on the trail. Meals in the huts usually include soups, pasta, rice dishes, and warm stews, often served with fresh bread and local cheese. Whether you are in a mountain refuge or a village taverna, the food is simple, nourishing, and full of local character.
Is altitude a concern on this adventure? What’s the highest altitude we’ll reach?
Altitude is generally not a major concern on the Mount Olympus Summit Journey. The highest point we reach is the summit of Mytikas at 2918 metres, which is below the threshold where altitude sickness typically becomes a risk. While you may feel slightly more breathless than usual during the final push to the summit, the gradual ascent and overnight stays in mountain refuges help your body adjust naturally. Most people handle the altitude well, especially with proper pacing, hydration, and support from our experienced team.
Are there porters on this trip? What do we need for our backpacks?
There are no porters on the Mount Olympus Summit Journey. Each participant carries their own backpack, which is why we help you pack light and smart. Our team will guide you through exactly what to bring so your pack stays under 6 kilograms. You will only need to carry the essentials for two nights in the mountain refuges, such as a change of clothes, waterproof layers, snacks, a water bottle, and any personal items. All other luggage stays securely stored at our hotel in Litochoro. With the right packing approach, your load stays light and your focus remains on the experience.
