The Gokyo Lakes Trek is a high-altitude journey through the Everest region of Nepal, leading to a chain of pristine turquoise lakes surrounded by snow-capped Himalayan peaks. It’s a route that offers stunning views, rich Sherpa culture, and a quieter alternative to the Everest Base Camp trail.

Where is the Gokyo Valley?

The Gokyo Valley lies west of the main Everest trail, following the Dudh Kosi River before climbing into a glacial valley. The village of Gokyo, set beside the third lake, serves as the main stopping point for trekkers.

The Chain of Lakes

There are six main lakes, each fed by glacial meltwater. Their vibrant blue colour contrasts with the rugged peaks around them. These lakes are among the highest freshwater systems in the world and hold deep spiritual significance for local communities.

Trek Highlights

Some of the most memorable parts of the trek include:

  • Crossing high suspension bridges over rushing rivers
  • Reaching Gokyo Ri for a panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu
  • Walking along the Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest glacier in Nepal

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The trek reaches heights of over 5,300 metres. It’s important to take acclimatisation days in places like Namche Bazaar and Gokyo to adjust gradually.

Life on the Trail

Trekkers stay in teahouses run by local families. Meals are simple but hearty, often including dal bhat, vegetable soup, or fried noodles. Evenings are a time to warm up in the dining room and share stories with fellow travellers.

Best Time to Go

The most popular seasons are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Milder weather and blooming landscapes
  • Autumn (October to November) – Clear skies and excellent visibility

Winter is quieter but brings colder temperatures and the possibility of snow-covered trails.

Why Choose the Gokyo Lakes Trek

This trek offers breathtaking scenery without the heavy foot traffic of the Everest Base Camp route. It’s perfect for those who want a blend of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and challenging high-altitude trekking.
