The Gokyo Lakes Trek takes you deep into the Everest region, past quiet Sherpa villages, glacial valleys, and a chain of turquoise lakes set against some of the highest peaks in the world. It’s less crowded than the classic Everest Base Camp route but no less breathtaking.

A Different Path in the Everest Region

The trail to Gokyo follows the Dudh Kosi River before climbing into the Gokyo Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through pine and rhododendron forests, cross suspension bridges, and trek into a landscape dominated by snow-capped giants like Cho Oyu and Everest.

The Chain of Lakes

There are six main Gokyo Lakes, each more striking than the last. The village of Gokyo sits beside the third lake, a turquoise jewel that reflects the surrounding peaks. This is your base for exploring the area.

Gokyo Ri

One of the highlights is climbing Gokyo Ri, a hill above the village that offers a sweeping panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Many trekkers say the view rivals or even surpasses that from Kala Patthar.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The trek reaches heights above 5,300 metres, so gradual acclimatisation is essential. Itineraries usually include rest days in Namche Bazaar and Gokyo to help your body adjust.

Life on the Trail

You’ll stay in family-run teahouses that offer warm meals and a cosy bed. Dal bhat, vegetable soups, and Tibetan bread are common staples. Evenings often end with trekkers gathered around a stove in the dining room.

When to Go

The best seasons are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Wildflowers and milder weather
  • Autumn (October to November) – Crisp, clear skies and stable conditions

In winter, the trail is quieter but much colder, and snow can make passes impassable.

The Challenge and the Reward

The Gokyo Lakes Trek isn’t as crowded as the Everest Base Camp route, but it still demands a good level of fitness. The combination of high passes, glacier views, and shimmering lakes makes every step worthwhile.
